Kim Dong-ju (Doosan Bears) pitched well to lead his team to victory.

Kim Dong-ju pitched six innings of one run (one earned), two hits (one home run), two walks, and two strikeouts to improve to 3-5 on the season in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League against the LG Twins at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul. It was his fourth quality start of the season (6+ innings, 3 earned runs or less).

Kim Dong-joo was in trouble early in the game. After walking Hong Chang-ki and Park Hae-min in the top of the first, a Kim Hyun-soo walk and an Austin Dean single put runners on first and second. However, he struck out Oh Ji-hwan on a foul fly to end the threat. The second inning ended with a triple play.

But in the bottom of the third, he gave up his first run. Park gave up a home run to Hae-min Park, who came to bat with the bases loaded. In a 1B2S, Park hit a 146 km/h fastball that was higher than the strike zone and went over the right field fence. Kim Dong-joo then walked Kim Hyun-soo, but got Austin to fly out to third base. 메이저사이트

After that, they settled down. Both the fourth and fifth innings ended with a triple play. In the top of the sixth, Park allowed leadoff hitter Hae-min to reach on an error by second baseman Kang Seung-ho, but Jang Seung-hyun threw out Kim Hyun-soo at the plate and retired both Kim and Austin on a fly ball to left field.

The Doosan bats also responded to Kim Dong-ju’s strong pitching. In the bottom of the fourth, Yang Seok-hwan tied the game with a home run. In the bottom of the fifth, Park Myung-geun’s bomb with runners on second and third tied the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Kim Jae-ho’s RBI single made it 3-1. Chung Chul-won, who came on in the top of the ninth, finished the game without allowing a run.

After the game, manager Lee Seung-yeop said, “Starting pitcher Kim Dong-ju did a great job in a high-pressure game. He was almost perfect except for one home run.”

“I think it helped that I was eagerly preparing in the second team,” Kim Dong-ju told the press, “I rested a lot and (Jang) Seung-hyun did what my brother asked him to do, so I think the result was good.”

Initially, Yang was the starting catcher for the day. However, he was injured while receiving bullpen pitches before the start of the game, so Jang Seung-hyun received the ball from Kim Dong-joo from the first batter of the first inning.

“I was worried that Seung-hyun would have a hard time because his brother came out so suddenly, but he did a great job,” Kim said. “We had a short conversation before the game, and he said, ‘The ball is good, so throw it confidently,'” Kim said.

Kim was removed from the first team roster on Aug. 24 after a poor outing against the Gochuk Kiwoom Heroes in which he allowed four runs (four earned) in 1⅔ innings. Since then, he has appeared in three games for the second team, going 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched, allowing 10 runs (10 earned) on 18 hits, five walks and nine strikeouts. In his most recent outing, a six-inning no-hitter against the SSG Landers on April 16, he earned another shot at the first team.

“I was most concerned about my pitches. I think I got a lot of strikes, and I felt that I improved in that area,” Kim said.

Doosan has 13 games left in the regular season. Kwak Bin is currently on the Korean National Baseball Team for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
